Individual Counseling

Individual therapy helps clients build momentum for change and improves their quality of life. Knowing that you don’t have to face your struggles alone can be deeply healing. Individual work can be helpful for anxiety, stress, food-related issues, trauma, sexuality, etc. Our goal in individual counseling is to help establish healthy coping skills. Greenbrier Counseling utilizes person-centered, trauma-informed, body-positive, LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy to help build self-compassion, self-awareness, and resilience.

Trauma-Informed Therapy

Trauma is a word with a lot of meaning behind it. When we say someone has experienced trauma, most often the person will deny it. “My problems aren’t that big.” However, trauma isn’t exclusive to those who have been through wars. We view trauma as any adverse experience that left you with a belief about yourself that is inherently untrue and inherently painful. It is also important to note that while trauma happens on the individual level, it also can happen on a societal or even global scale. Oppression can often lead to traumatic experiences for minority communities. At Greenbrier Counseling, all levels of trauma are considered when looking at an individual client holistically.

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a unique modality specifically designed to remedy trauma histories. It can be used to address numerous issues and is even helpful alongside other therapy modalities. EMDR practitioners utilize bilateral stimulation (ex. eye movements) to aid clients in processing unresolved memories from adverse experiences.

Grief & Loss Support

Grief is involved in almost every aspect of our human experiences. Loss may be present after a life transition, after a breakup, or after a trauma. The year 2020 has presented us with several different forms of loss and trauma. Whatever the loss, at Greenbrier Counseling, you can expect that we will be patient, compassionate, and empathic when listening to your story. We will take this entirely at your pace. Know that you do not have to face this burden alone.

LGBTQIA+ Affirming Care

Whatever your struggle, we will support you in an LGBTQIA+ affirming manner. Founded by a member of the LGBTQIA+, Greenbrier Counseling embraces you and your identities in our efforts to help you meet your goals. This includes work addressing the negative impact that transphobia, homophobia, and heterosexism play in your life. Our goal is to help you be who you want to be in the world. You may have dealt with discrimination or violence and have created coping mechanisms to survive. Our affirming care will assist you in understanding the root causes of these behaviors and will aid you in determining new methods of coping.

Additionally, you may be interested in a social and/or physical transition of your gender; this is a service Greenbrier Counseling is equipped to assist you with. Lastly, your sexuality or gender may not be the main reason you are seeking counseling, however, we will endeavor to always treat you with dignity and compassion.
